English term

open-eyed

English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Hi!

I need a native-speaker's paraphrase/explanation of "open-eyed" in this context:

The 1995 photograph Franklin’s Face, by Diana López (b. 1968), was created by the eight-year-old son of the artist’s housekeeper, to whom Ms. López gave a camera, with instructions to photograph things he did and did not like. The result is a candid, ****open-eyed**** view of a complex social reality seen through two distinct environments: the wealthy house where the boy’s mother works and the poor barrio in which he lives.

Thanks!

Ignacio

uncensored

because a child doesn't know how to censor themselves; they have not yet learned that some scenes might be considered unacceptable or ugly (to society)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks. Choosing only one was tough this time. Gabriel's is very good, and so is Julie's. But this one sort of inspired me to my final choice: unprejudiced. Thank you all! Ignacio"

open-eyed = with the eyes open or wide open, as in awareness or amazement (Collins Concise English Dictionary)

Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : above all, here, in awareness

Thanks, Dusty. I think you are right. That clarifies the sense of it.
agree Margaret Lagoyianni : 'wide-open' or 'wide-eyed'

with the eyes (wide) open in awareness I think (because it agrees with candid), rather than 'wide-eyed' in amazement
