Used in medical research when conducting human trials to ensure that test subjects do not know what aspect of a test they're being subjected to and may not ilfuence same through self-suggestion, whilst personnel applying the testing protocol (following randomly-selected pattern) do know what they're applying and to whom. (A double-blind situation is when neither subject nor the person applying the test know what is being applied.)
Simple-blind applications are rare indeed.
