English term or phrase: "file a friend of the court brief"
Se trata de una apelación y la frase que os agradecería que me tradujerais al español y me explicarais qué es es "to file a friend of the court brief". Os pongo un poco de contexto.

Muchísimas gracias de antemano.

Although the appeals court rejected the assertion that the lower court's verdict was based on a misapplication of the libel law, it agreed with KWTV that the jury had been improperly instructed on how to award damages. The court sent the case back to the lower court for a new trial, which will focus solely on the amount of damages the veterinarian will receive.

The appeals court also denied a request by The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, The New York Times, Dow Jones & Co., Allbritton Communications, The Oklahoma Publishing Company and the Radio-Television News Directors Association for permission "to file a friend-of-the-court brief" in the case.

KWTV's attorney Jon Epstein said his firm is very likely to seek either a rehearing of the case by the appellate court or permission to appeal to the state Supreme Court.

AMICUS CURIAE : despite the google entries (and my own memory on the spelling), Merriam Webster provides this:

http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary

Main Entry: amicus cu·ri·ae
Pronunciation: -\'kyur-E-\"I, -\'kur-, -i-\"E
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural amici curiae
Etymology: New Latin, literally, friend of the court
Date: 1612
: one (as a professional person or organization) that is not a party to a particular litigation but that is permitted by the court to advise it in respect to some matter of law that directly affects the case in question

Merriam Webster is an extremely trustworthy source for the spelling reference so it should be used in preference to my original answer.

Explanation:
Supongo que se refiere a un "amicus brief", en cuyo caso se traduciría como un escrito presentado en calidad de amigo del tribunal

amicus curiae does not exist in Spanish, hombre bueno doubles here for "friend of the court"

Explanation:
"Amicus curiae" does not exist in Spain as a term. The Real Academia de la Lengua Española does not carry it, and has steadfastly refused to adopt it, being that the "hombre bueno" performs the same de-facto role of conciliator of law as the "friend of the court", who appeals but "with consent of both parties". Larousse in Spanish (very ecclectic), Vox in Spanish, Salvat Enciclopedic Dictionary in Spanish and even Collins English-Spanish do not carry the term. My experience of 14 years as US-Spain Liaison Officer for security, fraud and criminal matters, which involved Spanish law and correct translations back and forth on that subject as well as consultations with innumerable Spanish jurists where both "hombre bueno" and "friend of the court" came up more than a few times, told me that the "hombre bueno" performs basically the same role as the English-termed "amicus curiae".

By the way, in the answers to your question I found interesting, accurate and entertaining all the English-language references given for "friend of the court" being one and the same with the English-language term "amicus curiae".

I think a good reading of how Latin terms came to be introduced into English Law whether they had been used in Roman jurisprudence or not would be of interest as well.
